A barcode calorie scanner that stays free

Zabeau’s barcode calorie scanner reads the barcode on any packaged food and pulls its calories and macros from Open Food Facts — free, forever. Point your camera, and the item is ready to log in seconds. Where many calorie apps lock barcode scanning behind a subscription, Zabeau keeps it in the free tracker.

Barcode scanning is the fastest honest way to log packaged food. There’s no searching, no guessing a portion from memory — the label’s own numbers come straight in, and you just set how much you ate. Fewer seconds per meal means you actually keep logging, and consistent logging is what moves the trend.

Zabeau also reads the label critically. If a product’s stated calories don’t reconcile with its protein, carbs, and fat, it flags the entry — a small guard against a database typo quietly throwing off your day. You stay in control: adjust the portion, correct a number, or fall back to search when a barcode isn’t recognized.

Fast, free, and honest about the numbers

No paywall on the one feature you’ll use most, and a sanity check on the labels you scan.

One scan

Point and log

Aim your camera at the barcode and the item’s calories and macros come back from Open Food Facts in seconds. Set the portion, tap, logged.

Free forever

No paid add-on

Scanning lives in the free tracker — no trial clock, no upsell. The subscription is only for the AI coach.

Label sanity

Flags labels that don’t add up

Zabeau checks the numbers: if a label’s calories don’t add up against its protein, carbs, and fat, it flags it so a typo doesn’t skew your day.

When a barcode misses

Two free fallbacks

Not every product is in the database yet. You’re never stuck.

Search or save. Look it up in USDA food data, or add it as a custom food once and reuse it forever — after that it’s a one-tap log with no scan at all. Everything here is free. When you want a camera that reads a whole plate instead of a barcode, that’s the Coach-tier photo calorie counter. See the full tracker on features.

Barcode scanning FAQ

Common questions

Is barcode scanning really free?

Yes — free forever, and part of the free tracker with no paid add-on. It’s powered by Open Food Facts, an open food database. Many calorie apps put barcode scanning behind a subscription; Zabeau doesn’t. The only thing behind a subscription is the AI coach, and scanning has nothing to do with it.

What if a product isn’t found?

You have two free fallbacks. Search USDA food data for a close match, or add it as a custom food once and reuse it forever — after that it logs in one tap without any scan. Open Food Facts is community-maintained and growing, so a barcode that misses today may resolve later.

Does barcode scanning work offline?

Logging works fully offline — any food already in your library or saved meals logs with no signal, and syncs when you’re back online. A brand-new barcode lookup reaches Open Food Facts, so the first time you scan an unfamiliar product it needs a connection; once that food is saved to your library it’s available offline afterward.

Do I need an account?

No card, no password. Sign in with Apple or Google and start scanning — you can export or delete your data anytime, and account deletion is built right into the app.
